Santiago Ramón y Cajal
Spanish histologist (1852-1934) whose microscopic studies established that the nervous system is built of individual cells — the neuron doctrine at the foundation of modern neuroscience. Cajal shared the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Camillo Golgi, awarded in recognition of their work on the structure of the nervous system.
Using an improved version of Golgi's silver-staining method, Cajal produced the histological evidence that nerve cells are independent units rather than a continuous network, the position now known as the neuron doctrine — opposing the reticular theory defended by Golgi himself, including in Golgi's own 1906 Nobel lecture.
Cajal held chairs of anatomy and histology at the universities of Valencia, Barcelona and Madrid, and described his scientific formation and laboratory practice in his autobiography, Recollections of My Life.
