The piña of the Indies: the first European descriptions of the pineapple, and the crown that carried it
Oviedo devoted a chapter of 1535 to the fruit the Christians called piña, and it contains the agronomy that made the plant portable: one fruit per plant, ten months to ripen, and the crown on top as the planting material. Acosta, fifty-five years later, adds what the transfer could not do — an emperor was handed a pineapple still on its plant and praised the smell without tasting it. Genomics explains why the crown mattered: the plant is self-incompatible and travels as a clone.
Why this wins its question: The pineapple's European story is usually told in two set pieces: Columbus meeting it in 1493, and eighteenth-century northern European hothouses competing to ripen one. The two Spanish texts that actually recorded how the plant works — one fruit per plant, ten months to season, the crown as planting stock, and the fact that the ripe fruit could not be shipped while the crown could — are rarely quoted, and the genomic reason the crown was obligatory is never joined to them. This object quotes both chapters from the page scans, sets Oviedo's own admission that his pen and his plate were unequal to the fruit beside his count of the languages he treats as an obstacle, and binds the clonal propagation he described to the self-incompatibility and the narrow modern gene pool that genomics measures.

The earliest sustained European description of the pineapple is book VII chapter XIV of Oviedo's Historia general y natural de las Indias, headed "De las piñas que llaman los chripstianos, porque lo paresçen: la qual fructa nombran los indios yayama, é á çierto género de la misma fructa llaman boniama, é á otra generaçion diçen yayagua". The Castilian name is recorded as an imposition and a mistake in the same breath — they look like pine cones, "sin lo ser" — and Oviedo says the more proper name would have been alcarchopha, artichoke, from the spiny plant it grows on.
The chapter is an argument as much as a description. Oviedo ranks the fruit above anything he has seen in Spain, France, England, Germany, Italy, Sicily, Burgundy, Flanders, Tirol, Holland or Zeeland, above the fruits King Ferdinand gathered in his gardens of the Parque, the Parayso and Pujo Real, above the Esquiva Noya of Hercules d'Este on his island in the Po, and above the portable garden Ludovico Sforza had carried to his table on carts. He then reasons from the senses: of the five bodily senses the three that apply to fruit, and the fourth, touch, are excelled in this one, while the fifth, hearing, the fruit cannot satisfy — so the reader is asked to listen to the description instead.
He then states the limits of his own medium, twice. "No pueden la pintura de mi pluma y palabras dar tan particular razon ni tan al proprio el blason desta fructa", he writes, so he has it drawn instead and refers the reader to the plate (Lám. 2.ª, fig. 10.ª); and he enters a protestation that if any reader should one day see the fruit, "me avrán por desculpado, si no supe, ni pude justamente loar esta fructa". The passage is a sixteenth-century natural historian conceding that a new organism outruns the descriptive apparatus available to him.
The praise is calibrated rather than uniform, which is what makes it usable evidence. Oviedo warns that not all piñas are of one kind or flavour: some are sour "por ser campesinas é mal cultivadas", or because the ground is unsuitable, so that "una piña haçe gran ventaja á otra piña"; and he grants that judgement of taste is not universal, since in Spain some hold figs better than pears, and "cada qual es mas inclinado á su gusto", palates differing as human faces differ from one another.
The agronomy in the chapter is exact, and it is the part that mattered for the plant's later career. Each piña grows on a very rough and spiny cardo of long pencas; from the middle rises a single round stalk bearing one fruit; it takes ten months or a year to come to season; and once cut "no da fructo mas aquel cardo, ni sirve sino á embaraçar el terreno". The way to plant more is named exactly: the rough cogollo crowning the fruit, and the shoots beside its stalk, "estos tales cogollos son la simiente ó subçession desta fructa".
Modern genomics explains why propagation by crown rather than by seed was not a colonial convenience but a property of the plant. The 2015 reference genome states that pineapple "is self-incompatible and all pre-Columbian and most post-Columbian varieties were selected from somatic mutations", the crop being maintained by clonal propagation; and that it "was already cultivated on a continental-wide scale following its initial domestication in northern South America, possibly more than 6000 BP", before Columbus met it in the West Indies in 1493. A 2025 survey of 91 accessions places the epicentres of domestication in the Guianas and the Amazon; the two readings differ in emphasis and both are reported here.
Fifty-five years after Oviedo, Acosta treats the same fruit in book IV chapter 19 of the Historia natural y moral de las Indias and opens with a warning about the naming itself: the first Spaniards gave things of the Indies Spanish names taken from things they slightly resembled — piñas, pepinos, ciruelas — "siendo en la verdad frutas diversísimas, y que es mucho mas sin comparacion en lo que difieren". He describes the eating, in slices left a while in water and salt, and answers the medical objection of the day: some hold that pineapples "engendran colera" and are not wholesome food, "mas no he visto experiencia que las acredite mal".
Acosta also records what the transfer could not yet do. The fruit needs hot, humid ground; the best come from the Barlovento islands; in Peru it is not grown at all but carried from the Andes, "pero no son buenas ni bien maduras". One was presented to the Emperor Charles brought "en su planta, que de otra suerte no podia venir" — still attached to the plant, because no other way of shipping it worked — and the emperor "el olor alabó: el sabor no quiso ver que tal era", praised the smell and declined to taste. Acosta adds that in New Spain he had seen excellent preserved pineapple, which is how the fruit did travel.
The plant nonetheless moved faster than the fruit: the genome paper states that "by the end of the 16th century pineapple had become pantropical", that is within about eighty years of Oviedo's chapter and within a decade of Acosta's. What travelled was the clone — a crown or a slip surviving a voyage that the ripe fruit could not.
The clone that made the transfer possible also fixed its costs. The 2025 germplasm study reports that "cultivated pineapples have a relatively narrow genetic base, owing to their origins and propagation from a limited genetic reservoir", and finds the Queen, Singapore Spanish and Smooth Cayenne groups marked by low inbreeding coefficients indicating "predominantly asexual reproduction". The commercial pineapple of the twentieth century is a handful of vegetative lineages, and its uniformity descends directly from the propagation method Oviedo described.
The witness is an interested one and the same chapter shows it. Oviedo was a royal official and chronicler resident in the Indies as a beneficiary of the settlement he described, and a declared opponent of Las Casas. In the closing lines of the pineapple chapter he counts the languages of Tierra Firme — in twenty or thirty leagues "acaesçe aver quatro ó çinco lenguas" — and gives that multiplicity as one of the principal reasons why few Christians sustain themselves "entre estas gentes bárbaras". The aesthetic wonder and the vocabulary of conquest are on the same page, and are reported here together rather than separated.
