The piedra de culebra: a Philippine artefact, its recipe printed in 1754, and the European fable it displaced
Europe paid for snake-stones believed to grow in the heads of Oriental serpents. Section VI of Torrubia's Aparato (Madrid 1754) prints the recipe instead: deer antler cut with a bolo, calcined overnight under rice husk by the Indians of Camarines, carved, smoothed with the is-is leaf and burnished on leather. The colours the learned theorised about are uneven firing. He names the makers, prints Vallisneri's disconfirming experiments in full, and puts the imposture on the European buyer.
Why this wins its question: The snake-stone is a famous item in the history of European credulity, and the standard account runs through Redi at Florence, Vallisneri at Padua and the Royal Society, with the object itself arriving from "the Indies" made by "Brahmins" and nobody in particular. This entry prints, from the sheets of a 1754 Madrid imprint that almost nothing in English cites, the one thing that account never has: the recipe, from a man who watched it done daily for fifteen years — the antler, the bolo, the rice-husk pyramid, the windless night, the is-is leaf, the leather burnish — together with the name the makers used for it, the province they came from, and the observation that the colour variation the learned theorised about is uneven firing. It sets that beside the experimental refutation Torrubia himself printed in full against his own thesis, and it keeps what a flattering version would drop: the traffickers were his own order, he wanted the object claimed for Spain in the same breath in which he credited it to its makers, and the cure he recommended to every traveller does not work.
Claims
Every assertion below is bound to registered sources and carries its own confidence. Weight them; do not treat the page as uniformly authoritative.
The section is announced as a debunking before it begins. Page 29 heads it "S. VI. DE LA PIEDRA DE CULEBRA ESPAÑOLA" and the sentence immediately above the head calls it "una gran pieza, à mi parecer, la que (sin serlo) es llamada Piedra de Culebra" — a great specimen, which is called snake-stone without being one. Paragraph 25 then gives the belief in its strongest form: the stone that Etmüller calls "Magnes venenorum" was so esteemed "que para conseguir una, creyeron muchos, era menester ir à luchar con una Serpiente Oriental capilluda, y à medio morir sacarsela de la cabeza", whence the Portuguese "Petra cobra de Capello", which Vallisneri renders "Pietra cobra de Cabelos" — a mistranslation Torrubia calls a great equivocation, hood read as hair.
The error is reconstructed as a reasonable inference rather than mocked, and that is the most interesting paragraph in the section. Page 30, paragraph 26: naturalists saw in the snake-stones "comunmente una figura, un color, una substancia, una consistencia"; they saw that they were universally offered as a remedy for serpent bites; and knowing that nature commonly provides the remedy not far from the harmful cause, "què mucho es creyessen, que uniformemente criaban estas piedras en sus cabezas las Serpientes para remedio de sus mordeduras". The uniformity of a manufactured object was read as the signature of a natural kind, and a standing doctrine about nature supplied the mechanism. Torrubia says the men who reasoned this way are "dignos de commiseracion", not fools.
The makers are named, in their own language, as a specific people and a specific province. Page 30, paragraph 28: the most accredited workshop of these stones, "digan lo que quisieren los Estrangeros, que solo la hallaron en la India Oriental", is the Philippine Islands; the object "se llama Baton Ajas, de Bato piedra, y Ajas culebra"; and "Los Artifices mas diestros, en nuestras Missiones Franciscanas, son los Indios de la Provincia de Camarines, ò Nueva Cazeres". The etymology given is of the Bikol-speaking region of southern Luzon, and this entry reports it as Torrubia prints it without testing it against any dictionary. The same paragraph says who moved the stones, and does not spare the author's own house: the traffickers in this "divina droga", to oblige devotees at Manila and to carry them to Europe, "son nuestros Religiosos".
The recipe is printed whole, and it is a complete process description of a kind rarely given for a non-European craft in this literature. Pages 30 and 31: the ingredients of "esta gran triaca son cuernos de Venado; los hornos la desnuda tierra, la leña paja, y el instrumento con que la trabaja el Indio un machete, à quien llaman Volo". The maker cuts the antler into small pieces and lays them on a course of "Hipa (esta es la càscara, que dexa el arròz quando lo limpian)", continuing in a pyramid of alternating husk and horn until the material is used up. A calm windless night is chosen, "porque si lo hay, arrebata, y altera la calcinacion"; the heap is fired on all sides, the husk burns slowly through, and by morning the pieces are calcined to the wanted state. They are then carved to shape — small, large, square, most often lenticular, "segun permite el trozo del cuerno quemado" — smoothed "con la hoja aspera de un arbolito llamado Is-is", and given their last perfection by burnishing on any tanned leather.
The recipe carries its own decisive test, and Torrubia states it as one. Page 31: where the husk lies thickest in the heap the fire naturally lasts longer, and the piece that burns most there "sale con unas betas blanquizcas, y vè aqui descubierto el mysterio de la diversidad de colores, que se notan en esta piedra". The variegation that had been treated as a natural marking is a firing artefact of an uneven kiln. He adds the sting: "Sobre esta casualidad formaron algunos eruditos notables idèas, ò para incrementar el cacohetes de su genio, ò para dàr que admirar con los passages de su critica à los que se hallan verdaderamente instruidos." An explanation of a variable by the process that produces it is the strongest single argument in the section, and it costs one sentence.
Colour is then treated as a measured function of roasting, against a named authority. Page 32 answers Feijoo's informant, who held that the horn roasted much turns entirely black: roasted little the pieces go black; roasted more, "subnigros, nigricantes, ò que tiran à negros"; roasted much they come out "de color blanquizco"; roasted much more, wholly white — "Esta es verdad, que saben hasta los Aprendices de Boticarios, que los calcinan." The Indians temper the husk fire so as to stop short of white, "y sin consistencia", leaving the piece "en tal estado, que sus poros tengan la competente laxitud para absorver, y recibir en sì los venenos". The operative variable is declared to be porosity rather than colour, and pieces of any of the three colours are said to work equally "como tengan la misma consistencia". The same page reports that Feijoo had already written that the snake-stone "no era en la verdad otra cosa, que un poco de CUERNO DE CIERVO LEVEMENTE TOSTADO", printed in the book's own capitals.
The book prints the experimental case against itself, at length and without abridgement. Page 35 quotes Vallisneri the elder in italic: he has taken pains to repeat the experiments of "el ingenuo, y célebre Redi" and has found the much-esteemed stones "vanas, è inutiles"; all should know he has reached the point of taking no notice of them, "porque he descubierto, que las dichas piedras son una impostura de los Indianos astutissimos en congregar el vulgo, y burlar à los Europèos"; the pieces are "ni piedras, ni huessos de Serpiente, sino pedazos de canillas de Baca tostados al fuego, y despues limados, y reducidos à figura lenticular, ù oval"; and he has made the test with pieces so fabricated, which resemble the ones that come from the Indies "como un huevo à otro huevo". A replication of Redi, a manufacturing hypothesis, and a matched-counterfeit control, printed verbatim by the man they refute.
Torrubia concedes the manufacture and contests only the material, which turns the dispute into a testable one. Page 36, paragraph 37: if the stones Vallisneri experimented with at Padua were nothing but "huessos de Buey tostados", how could they produce the effects obtained "con las verdaderas hechas, y fabricadas de cuerno de Venado?" He then turns his opponent's own case report against him — Vallisneri's account of a youth dying of a viper bite in the fields of Siena who was saved when the common vein of his right arm was opened and a drachm of spirit of hartshorn infused with a small syringe — and asks whether "Sucediera esto, si la Cirugia infusoria huviera usado de espiritu de huessos de Baca? Yo creo que no." The argument is wrong in its conclusion and correct in its form: it names the variable, predicts a difference, and points at the experiment that would settle it.
The attribution question is argued, and the answer is double-edged. Page 34, paragraph 34: having lived at Manila some fifteen years, Torrubia says he never once heard that the stones were brought to them from India — "antes sì, vì la ansia con que entre nosotros la buscaban los Malabares, y todos los Portugueses de la Costa de Choromandel". The reputation of the stone as the work of "sus Brachmanes, ò Bramines" he calls a "fingimiento" that has run in Europe as their work, "quizàs por el descuido de no haver los Españoles publicado antes este secreto". He then draws the conclusion in the possessive: "Por ser de nuestros Indios, (como me parece) debemos mirar esta piedra con especial cariño." The same sentence credits the Philippine makers with the invention and annexes it, and the section's title has already called the object Spanish. The credit and the appropriation are one move.
He also relocates the imposture, from the maker to the buyer. Page 37, closing paragraph 37: the incautious judge that a thing which is of the serpent, and of which only one is found "à una por testa", cannot be had for nothing — and "Si no creyeran, que era de Culebra, passàra nuestra Piedra entre aquellos Señores sin la nota de patraña, y los Indianos, que la dàn de gracia, no fueran tan maltratados por su galanterìa." The fraud, on this reading, is manufactured in Europe out of the scarcity story that justifies the price, and the makers, who give the thing away, are the ones defamed for it. Page 34 shows what he is answering: an author who places the Aster Italorum among the first alexipharmics on a single say-so while putting "nuestra Piedra de Culebra en la cathegorìa de patraña, en la clase de impostura de Indianos, y en el ultimo grado del desprecio".
The stated origin of the practice is local need, not export. Page 36: in the Philippines the stones "no se fabricaron en los principios para traerlas à Europa, sino para defenderse de los continuos insultos de carbuncos pestilenciales, y mordeduras de Culebras, Escorpiones, y otros animales venenosos, que abundan en las Islas"; their good effects made them valued there, and Spaniards, seeing that there were bitten people in Spain too, "hicieron correr la medicina para utilidad de la Nacion". Page 37, paragraph 38, adds the two operating instructions, one of them a maintenance procedure: a short incision is to be made before the stone is applied when the venom is very active; and when the stone has worked and detaches of itself, "los Indios la ponen sobre unas asquas, para que el fuego absuma aquel licorcillo viscoso, que sacò de la parte lastimada", the purpose being to restore it "al pristino vigor, que tenia en su competente laxitud de poros", which those naturales achieve with fire "mejor que con agua, leche, ni vino".
What survives and what does not. The description of the object survives and is confirmed by the two witnesses on these pages who disagree about everything else: the snake-stone is manufactured animal bone or antler, calcined and shaped, and it does not grow in a serpent's head. So does the account of why it was believed, and the identification of the colour variation as a kiln artefact. The therapeutic claim does not. Calcined antler is a porous calcium-phosphate char and will adsorb liquid from a wound, which is why the material feels as though it is working and why the described reactivation on embers is the right way to treat an exhausted adsorbent; adsorption at the bite site does not neutralise a systemically distributed venom, and nothing on these pages tests it against no treatment. Vallisneri's verdict of "vanas, è inutiles" is the one this entry reports as correct, and Torrubia's counter-argument from deer horn against ox bone is reported as the argument he made, not as a finding.
The limits of this entry. Everything above is read from pages 29 to 37 of the Madrid 1754 printing, section VI, paragraphs 25 to 38. Everything attributed to Etmüller, Vanier, Feijoo, Redi, Vallisneri, Baglivi, Gimma or Kircher is quoted as Torrubia prints and cites it; no copy of any of those works was consulted here, the accuracy of his quotations and page references is not tested, and the paragraph numbering on page 35 is irregular in this printing. The Bikol etymology "Baton Ajas" is his and is not checked against a dictionary. Nothing here establishes how many stones were made or sold, at what price, over what period, whether the Camarines makers were paid, what the Franciscan trade in them amounted to, or whether any European pharmacopoeia dropped the article after 1754. The plates are not opened. The chemical and pharmacological statements in the preceding claim are the ordinary modern reading and are not taken from this source.
