Papaya: a named man, a named route, and the first recorded colonial transfer of an American fruit
Oviedo's chapter on the papaya gives the fruit three names and then does something rarer: it names the man who moved it. A hidalgo called Alonso de Valverde carried the fruit from the country of the cacique Quebore, whom he held in encomienda, to Darién, where the Spaniards sowed the seed and passed it to Hispaniola and the other islands. The plant was already a Mesoamerican domesticate; what the Spanish added was transport, and the document records the coercion in the same sentence.
Why this wins its question: General accounts of papaya say it is native to Central America and was "spread by Spanish and Portuguese explorers" - agentless, dateless, unsourced. The primary chapter read here supplies what that sentence drops: a named man, Alonso de Valverde; a named starting point, the country of the cacique Quebore on the Veragua coast; a route, to Darién and thence to Hispaniola and the other islands; the three names the fruit carried in three regions, with the Spanish one explained by the cress taste of its seeds; and, in the same clause as the transfer, the encomienda that Valverde held over the cacique. It then does what a chronicle cannot: pins the plant's origin with a population-genetic survey of wild Mexican papaya, and dates the hermaphrodite chromosome that makes the crop what it is to a pre-Columbian domestication, with the credible interval printed rather than rounded away. Achievement, coercion and the limits of both in one entry.

The account used here is capítulo XXXIII of libro VIII of Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo's Historia general y natural de las Indias, read from the Real Academia de la Historia edition printed at Madrid in 1851, tomo I, pages 323-324. Its heading gives the plant three names at once: "Del árbol que en esta Isla Española llaman papaya, y en la Tierra-Firme los llaman los españoles los higos del mastuerço, y en la provinçia de Nicaragua llaman á tal árbol olocoton." The Spanish name is explained on the same page - the seeds taste exactly of cress, mastuerzo.
The chapter records what almost no sixteenth-century account of a transplanted American plant records - an agent and a route. The Spaniards first found the fruit in the land of the cacique Quebore, on the Veragua coast west of Nombre de Dios, where they grew as large as medium cooking pots; "é un hidalgo, llamado Alonso de Valverde, en cuya encomienda estaba aquel caçique de Quebore, los llevó estos higos al Darien, donde los chripstianos los sembraron de aquellas pepitas é en otras muchas partes, é se truxeron á esta é otras islas é se han fecho muy bien, é aqui los llaman papayas."
The same sentence carries the cost, and it is not an inference drawn here but the phrase the chronicler used: the man who moved the fruit is identified by the encomienda he held over the cacique in whose country it grew. The transfer of the plant travelled along the institution of forced indigenous labour and tribute, and Oviedo records the two facts as one.
Oviedo also reasons about what kind of organism it is, and gets it right on the evidence he states: "La corteça deste árbol (al qual yo tengo mas por planta que no por árbol) es gruessa como un dedo, é lo de dentro ó madera dél es tierno é fofo, é el coraçon es hueco de alto á bajo" - he holds it for a plant rather than a tree, because the trunk is soft and hollow, and adds that a sword testing its strength cuts a palm's depth at every stroke.
Cultivation is described as a managed cycle with a replacement rule. A single-stemmed plant bears every year for five or six years, then the fruit comes small, and after that "no vale nada é se pierde"; accordingly "ponen los indios de la simiente otros antes que aquellos se acaben" - the Indians sow others from seed before the standing plants give out. Papaya orchards in 1535 were being kept in succession, not merely gathered from.
One observation on the next page has an explanation the author could not have had. Oviedo notes that a plant bearing round fruit never bears elongated fruit, nor the reverse, "porque son distintas naturas é castas desta fructa; mas en el sabor é en todo lo demas, todos son una misma cosa" - distinct natures and breeds, identical in taste and everything else. Modern horticulture states the same split as a consequence of the plant's sex: "the fruit of female plants is round, whereas that of hermaphrodites is pyriform in shape." Whether Oviedo's two castas are exactly the two sex forms is an inference drawn here, not something either source asserts.
Where the plant came from is settled independently of the chronicle. Wild Carica papaya occurs in the lowland tropical and sub-tropical forests of Mesoamerica; a microsatellite and chloroplast survey of wild Mexican populations identifies the zone of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec as a diversity hotspot and tentatively as the species' point of origin, finds Mexican populations more diverse than Costa Rican ones, and suggests the Costa Rican stands may be feral descendants of cultivated plants carrying a domestication bottleneck. That the Spaniards met the fruit on the Central American isthmus and had to carry it to Hispaniola fits a Mesoamerican native range.
The plant the Spaniards moved was already someone else's work. Comparative genomics dates the hermaphrodite Yh chromosome of papaya to roughly 4,000 years ago - with a wide credible interval of 1,400-6,700 years - and concludes that "the low MSY3-Yh divergence supports the hypothesis that hermaphrodite papaya is a product of human domestication", resulting from "papaya domestication by the Mayans or other indigenous cultures". The Spanish contribution to papaya is carriage, not breeding, and the dating carries its own uncertainty.
The limits are worth naming. Oviedo gives no year for Valverde's carriage and no port; the modern genetic work read here does not address post-contact dispersal at all, so nothing in this entry connects the sixteenth-century Caribbean introduction to the population structure of papaya today; and the route by which papaya reached Asia, where it is now grown at scale, is not documented by any source opened for this object.
