Criollo cattle: the Iberian founding herd of the Americas (1493- )

The cattle loaded at La Gomera in the Canaries on Columbus's second voyage of 1493 founded every American Criollo breed. Genomics of Colombian, Venezuelan and Caribbean herds now reads the crossing out of the animals: a European taurine base, African taurine and indicine admixture layered on after, and tropical selection strong enough to leave signatures in the prolactin receptor gene. The breeds carrying that record are being replaced by imported commercial stock.

Why this wins its question: Ask where American cattle came from and the answer on offer is a sentence - "the Spanish brought them" - attached to no date, no port, no evidence and no afterlife. This object supplies all four from peer-reviewed genomics rather than breed folklore: the loading point at La Gomera in the Canaries on the second voyage of 1493, the century-long lag before the Llanos became a ranching economy by 1600, and then the part no popular account carries at all - that 308 genotyped animals across six breeds show the Iberian founding as the base layer of a three-way mixture, with almost 35% African taurine ancestry in the Guadeloupe breed and indicine admixture throughout, and that five centuries of tropical selection left signatures at PRLR producing the "slick" coat. It closes where the popular version never goes: the breeds carrying that record are being replaced by commercial stock and the authors call it an erosion of indigenous genetic resources. The ecological cost of the grazing economy is bound to a separate palaeoecological synthesis and stated with its own regional variation rather than flattened in either direction.
