The coconut on two American coasts: what the Manila galleon carried, and what was already there

America has three coconut populations with three histories: the Pacific coast of Mexico, Philippine and stocked by repeated Spanish shipments after the conquest; the Caribbean and Atlantic, Indian and Portuguese; and the palms of Pacific Panama, descended from perhaps two to five Philippine founders on a date still disputed. The documents in that dispute are Spanish chronicles, and the charge that Oviedo could not tell a coconut from another palm traces to an 1851 engraver.

Why this wins its question: The question "did the Spanish bring the coconut to America?" is answered everywhere in reach with one sentence that is wrong whichever way it is said, because there are three American coconut populations and they have three different histories. This object separates them: the Pacific coast of Mexico, Philippine and post-conquest and stocked by repeated Spanish shipments; the Caribbean and Atlantic, Indian and Portuguese; and the Panamanian palms, Philippine by descent from perhaps two to five founders and still argued over. It attaches each to the genetic evidence that supports it, names the papers on both sides of the Panamanian dispute including a neutral third that says there is no consensus, and shows that the standard proof of Oviedo's incompetence as a botanical observer is an 1851 engraver's improvement of a marginal drawing the chronicler never assigned to coconut at all.

  1. A survey of 1,322 coconut accessions at ten microsatellite loci divides the species worldwide into two highly differentiated subpopulations corresponding to the Pacific and the Indo-Atlantic ocean basins, a structure the authors read as two independent origins of cultivation. The Pacific group spans Southeast Asia, the South Pacific and the Pacific coast of the Americas; the Indo-Atlantic group spans South Asia, Africa, the Atlantic coast of the Americas and the Caribbean.

  2. The coconuts of the Pacific coast of Mexico are Philippine and their arrival is post-conquest. The 2011 survey states that this coast "was also populated largely by Philippine coconuts - but in post-colonial times and through multiple introductions", and that its genetic composition "more closely reflects the genetic heterogeneity of the Philippines" than the Panamanian population does. Repeated shipments, rather than one founding cargo, are what that heterogeneity records.

  3. A minor component of the Mexican population points to a second Spanish route. The same analysis notes that "the small contribution of the 'South Pacific' component in Mexico may reflect early Spanish importations from the Solomon Islands". The wording is the authors' own hedge and is kept here: this is an inference from population structure, not a shipping record.

  4. The Atlantic side of the Americas received a different coconut from a different empire. European introductions into the Caribbean and Atlantic basins "appear to be of Indian origin", in marked contrast to the clearly Pacific composition of the Mexican palms, and the historical records cited describe the Portuguese establishing coconut plantations in West Africa, Brazil and later the Caribbean after Vasco da Gama's expedition of 1498. A separate 2016 study of Brazilian tall coconuts groups the two Brazilian accessions with the West African Tall, and reports the first Brazilian planting on the coast of Bahia in 1553 with Mozambique as the presumed source and Cape Verde as the route.

  5. The Panamanian palms are neither of these. The Pacific-coast "Panama Tall" is characterised predominantly by a 'Panama' population component that is absent everywhere else in the world sample except in the Philippines, where it occurs at low frequency - a pattern the authors read as a founder event following introduction from the Philippines. The 2014 paper adds that all the alleles of the Panama Tall exist in the Philippines while the reverse is not true, which is what fixes the direction of the movement, and puts the founding effective population at between two and five palms.

  6. Whether those Panamanian palms arrived before or after the Spanish is an open dispute, and this object does not settle it. Two papers of 2012 and 2013 argue that the evidence for a pre-contact presence is insufficient and that the Spaniards introduced the palm; the 2014 paper argues the opposite from the chronicles; and a 2016 study by unrelated authors records simply that "there is no consensus about the period when coconuts were introduced in the Pacific Coast of Latin America", citing both sides.

  7. The evidence in that dispute is Spanish chronicle prose, which is why the reliability of the chroniclers is the argument. The 2014 paper finds that Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo "effectively used fruit and seed size to distinguish coconut from other palms": across the dozen palms he describes in Book 9, chapter 4, he extends the name "coco" to various small three-apertured palm seeds but always marks them as the size of a walnut or an olive, against the "big coco" seen in the province of the cacique Chiman, which he says is bigger than a human head.

  8. The best-known charge against Oviedo's competence is traced in that paper to a later editor rather than to Oviedo. The drawing printed as Figure 15 of Plate 3 in the 1851 edition, and cited since as proof that he mixed coconut with Bactris, is in the original manuscript (folio 53v of ms. HM177, Huntington Library) a marginal drawing of Bactris fruits attached to a marginal addition about two Bactris species, recognisable by their fused, shallowly lobed calyces. The 1851 editor, who was not a botanist, placed it in the coconut section, and his engraver altered the calyces to make the fruits look more like coconuts.

  9. The second witness is Pedro Martir de Angleria, who never crossed the Atlantic and was reporting what he was told. His account places an abundance of cocos near Nata where the tide runs two leagues inland and leaves the ground dry at low water, says the trees sprout and grow spontaneously in such places and nowhere else unless transplanted young, and reports the opinion that the high tide leaves the seeds there from unknown regions. The 2014 authors identify the site as the salt flats at Aguadulce, Panama, and argue that a second-hand reporter could not have invented the link between tidal reach and the palm's distribution.

  10. What is missing from the pre-Columbian case is stated by its own defenders. There is no linguistic, archaeological or ethnobotanical evidence of coconut use in America before contact; the genetic studies reveal no American centre of diversification; the coconut in America was apparently not cultivated by the peoples living beside it, with the possible exception of the Pearl Islands, so that - on the same authors' reckoning - people coexisted with the palm for at least four generations without developing a tradition of growing or using it.

  11. The limits of the evidence used here. All three studies genotype living germplasm collections, not archaeological material: there is no ancient DNA in this file, and a date of arrival is inferred from population structure plus documents, never measured directly. The 2014 paper is an argumentative review written by two of the authors of the 2011 genetic study, defending their earlier conclusion against critics, and its concessions - that Oviedo's dimensions are "rather approximate", that he wrote in Spain and "may have been betrayed by his memory" - are theirs, offered while defending him.
