Chirimoya: the fruit Acosta called Manjar Blanco, whose homeland its own geneticists still dispute, and whose largest producer today is Spain

Acosta in 1590 calls the anona soft and white as butter and, to some, the best fruit of the Indies — without once writing chirimoya. Where the tree came from is still disputed: a 1,504-tree survey puts the highest diversity in Cajamarca, in northern Peru, while marker work summarised by a 2024 genome paper points to Mesoamerica. The last leg is not disputed: the fruit reached Spain between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, and Spain now grows more of it than anywhere.

Why this wins its question: English-language writing on the cherimoya is a fruit-blog genre: "native to the Andes", a Mark Twain quotation, a note that Spain grows a lot of them. This object replaces every one of those moves with something checkable. It opens the actual 1590 Seville page and shows what the sixteenth-century Spanish record does and does not say — an anona the settlers called Manjar Blanco, the best specimens seen in New Spain, and no chirimoya anywhere on the leaf — which is the warning a reader needs before citing chroniclers for the history of one Annona species. It then prints the homeland question as the open dispute it is, quoting the Andean survey's Cajamarca result and the Mesoamerican marker evidence against each other and naming the sampling asymmetry that keeps it open, instead of picking the answer that makes the better story. And it puts Acosta's own ranking of American fruits below European ones on the record beside his praise, so the positive case rests on the page rather than on selection from it.

Every assertion below is bound to registered sources and carries its own confidence. Weight them; do not treat the page as uniformly authoritative.

  1. The earliest description this object rests on is a printed Spanish page, not a modern one. Book four, chapter 25 of Acosta's Historia natural y moral de las Indias (Seville, 1590) is headed "Del Chicoçapote, y de las Anonas, y de los Capolies", and after disposing of the chicozapote it turns to the fruit the settlers had nicknamed Manjar Blanco: "Ara el Manjar Blanco es la Anona, o Guanauana, que se da en Tierrafirme. Es la Anona del tamaño de pera muy grande, y assi algo ahusada, y abierta: todo lo de dentro es blando, y tierno como manteca, y blanco, y dulce, y de muy escogido gusto. No es Manjarblanco, aunque es blanco manjar, ni aun el encarecimiento dexa de ser largo, bien que tiene delicado, y sabroso gusto, y a juyzio de algunos es la mejor fruta de Indias. Tiene vnas pepitas negras en quantidad. Las mejores destas que he visto, son en la nueua España" (pp. 257–258).

  2. The word chirimoya does not appear on that page, and the fruit Acosta describes is named anona or guanábana — names that in modern botany belong to more than one species of the genus Annona. Anyone using the sixteenth-century chroniclers as evidence for the history of Annona cherimola specifically has to reckon with that: the Spanish natural history of 1590 describes an anona, records that the best specimens the author had seen were in New Spain, and leaves the species question open. This object therefore makes no claim that Acosta saw a cherimoya, and no claim about the first printed appearance of the word.

  3. The same chapter carries its own counterweight, and it is worth quoting because it is the opposite of a promotional description. Closing the previous chapter Acosta ranks the American fruits below the European ones — "Estos son los melocotones, y mançanas, y peras de Indias, Mameyes, y Guayauas, y Paltas, aunque yo antes escogeria las de Europa" — allows that habit or affection may lead others to prefer the fruit of the Indies, and then admits that the catalogue is tiring him as much as the reader: "y aun les cansarà el oyllo, y a mi tambien me va cansando". The first systematic European account of these fruits is also a European ranking of them, and the reader of this object should have that in front of them alongside the praise in claim 1.

  4. Where the tree came from is not settled, and the two peer-reviewed sources read here answer differently. The larger field study — 1,504 cherimoya trees sampled in Bolivia (395), Ecuador (351) and Peru (758) — reports that "Most early chroniclers and scientists proposed the Andean region, and more specifically, the valleys of southern Ecuador and northern Peru, as cherimoya's centre of origin", and that its own markers agree: "The highest allelic richness as well as the highest number of locally common alleles are found in the area of southern Ecuador and northern Peru, i.e. the putative centre of origin", with "Northern Peru, and more specifically the Cajamarca Department" showing the highest diversity of all.

  5. The competing reading is named by both sources rather than only by one. The Andean study itself sets out the alternative — "An alternative hypothesis for the centre of origin of cherimoya is Central America, which would imply that the area of northern Peru and southern Ecuador is a secondary centre of diversity" — and the 2024 genome paper reports that "more recent studies based on microsatellite markers revealed a higher allelic diversity in Mesoamerican cherimoya germplasm compared to the diversity found in South America", supporting "the Mesoamerican origin of cherimoya and a pre-Columbian movement of plant material ... to South America". Confidence here is low on purpose: this is a live dispute between bodies of marker data, and the Andean survey's sampling was confined to three Andean countries, which is precisely the asymmetry the Mesoamerican case turns on.

Stated plainly, because popular writing routinely picks one: no reader should take "the cherimoya comes from the Andes" or "the cherimoya comes from Central America" as a settled fact on the strength of the sources read here. What both agree on is older than either homeland claim — that the fruit was eaten in the Andean region in antiquity, with archaeological evidence reaching back to 2500 B.C., and that "the movement of germplasm across Mesoamerica, southern Mexico and the Andes probably took place in pre-Columbian times". The long-distance movement of this crop began before any European saw it.

  7. What the Spanish centuries added was the last leg of that movement and a commercial future the Andes did not get. The 2024 paper states that the fruit "was introduced to continental Spain between the 16th and 18th centuries. From there, this fruit species was further introduced to Italy, Portugal, and northern Africa", and that today it "is cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world, including the Americas, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Mediterranean region. Spain is the largest cherimoya-producing country, followed by Peru, Chile, Ecuador, and Mexico". An American domesticate whose biggest grower is the country that carried it across the Atlantic is a fact about distribution, not about domestication, and this object keeps the two apart.

  8. One further result of that paper is reported here with its provenance and a low confidence attached, because it is striking enough to be repeated carelessly. The two cultivars it compares are 'Booth', planted in the United States, and 'Fino de Jete', the cultivar grown in Spain; the authors estimate that they "diverged from each other about 1.93 Mya" and read that early Pleistocene split as evidence of "different origin and domestication" for the Spanish and American material. That is a molecular-clock estimate from two genomes, it implies a divergence far older than any domestication, and no other source read here corroborates it. It is printed as the paper's finding, not as this object's.

Only one colonial-era Spanish witness was opened, Acosta in 1590, and he does not name the chirimoya; no source read here names a ship, a year or a person for the fruit's arrival in Spain, so nothing narrower than the sixteenth-to-eighteenth-century window its source gives is asserted; and no archaeological report was read at first hand, so the 2500 B.C. date is reported as the genome paper's summary of the literature rather than as an independently checked figure.
