The Artificio de Juanelo: the machine that raised the Tagus to the Alcázar of Toledo (1560s–1581)

Toledo sits on a granite hill wrapped by the Tagus far below in its gorge. Between the 1560s and 1581 Juanelo Turriano — the Cremonese clockmaker retained by Charles V and Philip II — built a self-acting machine of jointed timbers and paired brass vessels that lifted river water some hundred metres to the alcázar continuously, reckoned among the wonders of the age. It worked, and it also failed as a venture: it decayed within a few years, and its maker died with the crown owing his heir for it.

Why this wins its question: English accounts of Juanelo Turriano usually reduce him to "the man who built automata for Charles V" and give the Toledo water-machine a sentence, often vague about how it worked or what became of it. This object quotes the eyewitness who saw the model demonstrated — Ambrosio de Morales — on the mechanism itself (the chain of jointed timbers, the paired brass vessels handing water up "vessel to vessel", the pulse-like regulation he calls the greatest marvel) and on the arithmetic boast Janelo made to his face; and it sets beside that the Real Academia's documented chronology: the 1573 royal payment "á su necesidad", the second ingenio finished in 1581, the first collapsing within fourteen years, and Garibay's eyewitness of the maker's poorly attended burial with the crown still owing his heir. Achievement and cost on the record together — a genuine wonder of Renaissance mechanism, and a venture that decayed fast and left its inventor unpaid.

Ambrosio de Morales, royal chronicler and an eyewitness, calls the machine one of the most notable things in the world: Toledo "tiene agora ... de nuevo una cosa de las mas insignes que puede haber en el mundo, y es el aqüeducto con que se sube el agua desde el rio hasta el alcazar. Inventólo y executólo Janelo Turriano, natural de Cremona en Lombardía". Janelo was already renowned, Morales notes, for the two clocks he had made for the Emperor Charles V and for Philip II, and for lesser inventions that had "puesto espanto ... al mundo"; the water-machine, he judged, surpassed them all.

  2. The problem it solved was real and old. Toledo stands "tan alta, y el rio Tajo tan hundido en el profundo de aquellos valles por donde corre" that the city was chronically short of water. Morales dates the project's origin to a lament by the Marqués del Gasto, Don Alonso de Ávalos, over that want; Janelo, "muy estimado y favorito" of the marqués, began to think how the water might be raised "á aquella tan inmensa altura", worked out in his mind "la suma de la idea y modelo de su máquina", and later contracted with the city of Toledo to deliver it "cierta quantidad de agua perpetua, que manase cabe el Alcazar, de donde puede llevarse á toda la ciudad".

  3. Morales describes the mechanism from the model Janelo showed him. Small timbers were pinned crosswise in a continuous chain so that "al moverse los dos primeros maderos junto al rio, se mueven todos los demas hasta el alcázar con gran sosiego y suavidad"; jointed into this motion were long brass pipes "quasi de una braza en largo" with a brass vessel at each end. As the timbers rose and fell, "al baxar el uno va lleno y el otro vacío", the two vessels of a pipe meeting sideways and holding still just long enough "para que el lleno derrame en el vacío", so the water was handed up the slope vessel to vessel. This is a documented sixteenth-century description of a bucket-chain water-lift working by a train of oscillating scoops.

What Morales singles out as the greatest marvel is the regulation of the motion: to temper the diverse movements "con tal medida y proporcion, que esten concordes unos con otros, y sujetos al primero de la rueda que se mueve con el agua del rio, como en la mas baxa arteria del pie humano, y en la mas alta de la cabeza se guarda una perpetua uniformidad ... de pulso". That one vessel full and its neighbour empty should keep so exact a concord, and that the whole intermittent train should pause and resume "como si fuesen inmóviles" while each pair exchanged water, "es cosa que sobrepuja todo entendimiento" — a problem, in his account, of proportions "muy diferente y extra de la que comunmente se enseña en el Aritmética".

  5. The scale and balance Morales reports are striking and, being a friend's celebration, are given here as his figures rather than as verified fact. The machine, he writes, had "mas de doscientos carros de madera harto delgadita" bearing "mas de quinientos quintales de laton, y mas de mil y quinientos cántaros de agua perpetuamente", yet so counterpoised that no timber carried a straining load, and that were the river-wheel to stop, a child could easily move the whole machine. He also credits Janelo with remaking, where the line crossed a wide street, "la maravillosa puente de madera que Julio César habia hecho en el cerco de Marsella", and with the copper chain and buckets that first drew the water from the river.

  6. Janelo's own vanity, and the standing of arithmetic in the enterprise, survive in a scene Morales reports first-hand. Shown the model, Morales remarked that its proportions were unlike any commonly taught; Janelo, pleased, answered "Así es" and boasted that though he had met men who knew more astronomy and geometry than he, "hasta agora no he visto quien sepa tanta Aritmética como yo". Morales replied that he no longer wondered at St Augustine's saying that one who knew perfectly all that can be known in numbers would do things like miracles — and Janelo was glad to hear it. The motto set on his statue was "VIRTVS. NVNQVAM. QVIESCIT.", which Morales renders "La fuerza de un grande ingenio nunca puede sosegar".

  7. The documented chronology and the machine's troubled fortune come from the Real Academia de Ciencias memoir of Luis de la Escosura (1888), working from the surviving papers. Philip II ordered 400 ducados paid to Juanelo in July 1573 "atendiendo á sus buenos servicios y á su necesidad"; the second ingenio was finished by 1581; and by the next year the first, "á los catorce años de su instalación", was already "muy mal tratado y comenzaba á hundirse", so the king ordered it repaired. The device that astonished Europe needed mending within a decade and a half of its installation.

  8. The maker's end is on record and it is not a triumph. Esteban Garibay, who was present, reports that "Joanelo Turriano, natural de Lombardía", who made "la admirable fábrica de la subida del agua del Tajo al Alcázar de Toledo", died in the city on 13 June 1585, aged about eighty-five, and was buried "no con el debido acompañamiento que merecía" in the chapel of Nuestra Señora del Soterraño in the church of the Carmen; a man "de poca conversación y mucho estudio ... y jamás habló bien en la española". Philip II had honoured and rewarded him, as Charles V had; but at his death the crown still owed his heir Bárbara Medea Turriano for the machines — she was paid two hundred ducados in December 1585 and two thousand in December 1586 "á buena cuenta de seis mil" owed for one of the ingenios.

  9. The two sources also mark the limits of what can be claimed here. Morales is a partisan witness — friend of Janelo, royal chronicler, writing to celebrate — and his figures for the load and balance cannot be checked; Escosura writes three centuries later and reconstructs the machine's workings from documents and from Roman precedent, not from the surviving device, which no longer existed. Neither source read here settles the exact hydraulic principle in engineering terms, the true head and delivery, or how much water actually reached the city and for how long. What the two together establish is a machine that contemporaries of the first rank saw working and judged extraordinary, a documented royal chronology, and a candid record of its disrepair and its maker's unpaid, unglamorous death.
