That cross-reference closes a circle visible in the printing itself: the law it points to is the last of título VIIII, of Charles V and the Empress Governor of 20 March 1532, requiring encomenderos to swear judicially before the governor that they will treat their Indians well, and it stands on the very leaf, folio 272, on which this title opens. This entry prints the law itself from the leaf of the 1791 fourth impression — one sentence, with its margin — and then does what no summary does: it collates it against Política Indiana, the standard treatise on the law of the Indies, and finds the two printings giving different days for the same cédula, 19 December against 29 December 1593, and the recopilated form generalising an order that Solórzano says was addressed to the Audiencia of Lima. It does the same for Philip IV's autograph clause, where the two texts diverge in three places and the treatise's editor's note that it is \"recopilada en la ley 23\" turns out to be approximate. And it keeps on the page the law printed three columns earlier, under the same heading of good treatment, which sentences an enslaved African to a hundred lashes at the pillory for mistreating an Indian and orders him sold if his master will not pay the damages.",
